We are in a muslim country. Its prayer time. As far as I can tell there are 2 things that happen all the time here, prayers and rain. Prayers even seem to happen in the middle of the night. Its like this middle eastern, haunting singing that happens at all hours. At least I think its prayers, I don't know why else it would be broadcast. As I write this, both prayers and rain are occurring.
So we are in a total fog in the office after having no sleep in forever and Rizaldi thinks we are going to have a presentation the next morning. Thankfully, I think he came around and realized we were in no shape to be at work the next morning. We ended up getting some food at this giant mall, complete with starbucks, pizza hut and indonesian walmart. Its not all as bad as that as it has local food too, but the mall nearby is very materialistic and western. I'm not sure how I feel about this place, a giant box of western goodies at western prices plopped down in the middle of Java next to ramshackle houses. In any case, I will continue eating here until I determine which of the local food places are good to eat at. My first meal consisted of a whole fried fish. They don't eat the head, but they eat most of the rest. Overall not bad, but it was so spicy I went through several bottles of water. I then had the bad idea to wolf down a couple of micropeppers that were so hot I thought my lips were going to peel off. Cici recommended them.
Met "the bros" next door. College guys, not a lot to do. Hopefully I'll spend some more time with them in the future. I'll have a future blog post describing my room and the area, but suffice to say that the word "luxurious" will not appear anywhere. The next day I pretty much just got some stuff for the room, went into work for the afternoon and slept a lot. Nothing too exciting here.
It's the call to prayer, and happens five times a day. And you are correct that the first one occurs in the middle of the night. A little before dawn, actually.
ReplyDeleteI have the 'middle eastern singing' on my computer, set to go off - you guessed it - five times a day.
Take a picture with Rizaldi!
